Effect of post heat treatment on the corrosion resistance of nickel based self-fluxing alloy co-deposited with tugsteno-cobalt hvof coatings

Abstract:

Nickel based coatings are widely used in numerous applications in the chemical and petroleum industries, due to their mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. The aim of the present work was the studied the influence of a post heat treatment on corrosion resistance of coatings of NiCrBSi COLMONOY 88® alloy with different amounts of WC-12%Co commercial powders on 1020 AISI steel substrate using high velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF) process. Microstructural characteristics of the coatings were evaluated employing Optical Microscopy coupled with image analysis and SEM with EDS microanalysis. The coatings corrosion resistance was evaluated using anodic Potentiodynamic Polarization and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) techniques. The results have shown that the corrosion resistance of the coating-substrate system decreased with the increase of the WC-12%Co amount in the powder mixture, obtaining the worst results for the mixture with 70% of WC-12Co. The coatings corrosion resistance improved substantially with the post heat treatment.
