Effect of three dimensional wave fields on the altimeter response

Abstract:

A description is given of the impact of three-dimensional wave fields (short- and long-crested waves) on the microwave backscattering from the sea surface. These three-dimensional waves are analytically (fourth-order) computed for various values of the wave steepness ε and the geometrical parameter μ which measures the three-dimensionality of the wave field. The three-dimensional altimeter model is a deterministic mathematical model for microwave specular reflection and allows the identification of the specular points of the sea surface profile which contribute to the reflection. It is shown that the relative altimeter response and the absolute bias are strongly dependent on the parameters ε and μ.
