Effectiveness of food attractants for fruit flies monitoring in Venezuela.
Abstract:
Fruit flies are pests of numerous fruit trees. To apply control methods it is important to use traps in order to monitor their presence and population fluctuation over time, for which trap with attractants can be suitable. Urea with molasses, PedGo®, PedGo Plus® and Nulure® were used as attractants for the detection and control of fruit flies of the genera Anastrepha and Ceratitis (Diptera: Tephritidae) in fruit orchards of five municipalities of Tachira state during 11 months. In each locality a random block design with four blocks and five treatments was used. Twenty JD EuGo 97 traps were filled with 300 ml of the attractant solution. Number of males and females captured were collected and identified fortnightly. The largest adult populations of fruit flies were trapped using PedGo Plus® attractant, followed by PedGo®, Nulure®, urea with molasses, and molasses. The PedGo Plus® attractant differed statistically from the attractants urea with molasses, and molasses. The largest adult populations of fruit flies were captured in Bramon, differing statistically from the other municipalities. Anastrepha fraterculus was the specie with the most number of flies trapped in a great diversity of hosts, regardless of environmental factors and geographical location. PedGo Plus® can be used as an alternative attractant for monitoring and controlling fruit flies at different altitudes of Tachira State.
