Effects of myofascial self-release. Systematic review
Abstract:
Introduction: Myofascial self-release (MSR) is an intervention performed to improve the mobility of muscle fascias, used as a complement during the warm-up or the return to calm of a sports training. Objective: To evaluate the existing evidence in literature on these types of techniques and their actual effects found. Methods: A bibliographic search was conducted in Pubmed, ScienceDirect, SportDiscus and Scopus electronic databases, including articles until May 2016. The search terms used were "foam roller", "foam rolling", "self-myofascial" "Effects" and "range of motion". Four sets of inclusion criteria were established. Results: 11 items were included. MSR appears to have short-term effects on range of motion, without affecting muscle performance and favoring recovery and decreasing the onset of late-onset muscle pain. Conclusions: The MSR technique is novel and recently applied in sports field although there is little evidence on its method of application due to heterogeneity of the methods used.
