Efficiency Increase of Supercharged Engines

Abstract:

This work studies the power reduction of a compression ignition engine during its operation in high altitude cities. In order to compensate for the loss produced by low air density, the basic operating parameters of the engine are modified in a non-intrusive way without making physical modifications, but rather with the engine bases maps variation to determine the most influential variables of the study, a design of experiments (DOE) is carried out, finding that the most important variables are fuel injection, injection rail pressure and turbocharger pressure. The information is collected by running the vehicle on a dynamometric bench to check the modifications efficiency, at the same time a gas analyzer measures the concentrations of CO, CO2, NOX and HC also, an opacimeter measures the particulate matter (PM) at the exhaust outlet. With the carried out modifications, a recovery of 10 kW in power is obtained without a substantial increase of engine pollutant emissions.
