Egg-stock and clutch size of two species of Thermocyclops Kiefer (Crustacea: Copepoda) in a tropical reservoir

Abstract:

The species of genus Thermocyclops KlEl'Ell 1927 are important components of the tropical freshwaters zooplankton. Particularly in the neotropical region, T. deci· piens (KlEl'Ell 1929} tends to dominate the crustacean woplankton in mesotrophic to eutrophic reservoirs, while T. minutus (LoWNDES 1934} though it occurs in large populations in some eutrophic systems, tends to be more numerous in mesotrophic to oligotrophic reservoirs. Co-occurrence of these species has been reported in some localities and seems to indicate systems in which environmental conditions are changing (REm 1989}. The explanations on the ecological success of one or another species in particular environments are not really clear due to the limited understanding of the biology of these species. This work was carried out in order to study some parameters related to the reproductive biology of both species in Socuy Reservoir. Socuy …
