Alcohol use and alcohol-related problems among Latinos in the United States
Abstract:
Raul Caetano, Frank Hector Galvan major problem for Latinos in the United States is the high level of alcohol consumption per capita among both adolescents and adults. Death rates linked to such alcohol—related conditions as cirrhosis and other chronic liver dis—eases are unacceptably high among Latinos. Moreover, high—risk behaviors such as alcohol—impaired driving and its consequences are matters of great concern to Latino communities and to society at large. Although the incidence of intimate partner violence (IPV) is also high among Latinos, the relationship between such violence and excessive drinking is complex and requires careful analysis. Gener—ally, problems stemming from high—risk drinking and chronic alcohol consump—tion beset Latino communities across the nation. This chapter describes the effects of such drinking by Latino adolescents and adults (defined as those eighteen years of age or older), the problems associated with excessive alcohol consumption, and the prevention efforts that have been developed to minimize alcohol problems among individuals in this ethnic group in the United States. Most of the research to be reviewed has been conducted since publication of the review of alcohol—related issues among Latinos by Aguirre—Molina and Caetano (1994). The present review is also focused on epidemiological data collected from household samples in the US population.
