Abstract:
INTRODUCTION: Breastfeeding is a type of feeding for the newborn and children up to 6 months and 1 year of age; and it is considered essential for growth and development through functional activity in the oral cavity and adjacent structures, thus preventing the appearance of maxillary alterations. OBJETIVE: The purpose of this research is to establish alterations in the jaws due to poor administration of breastfeeding, in mixed dentition children, who attend in dentistry Clinic. MATERIALS AND METHOD: A descriptive, analytical cross-sectional study was carried out, the universe of the study consisted of 175 children in the area of Pediatric Dentistry II and Orthodontics III and a sample of 51 children of mixed dentition of both sexes with study models was used. The transversal dimension was analyzed by the bogué index to determine the maxillary alteration and a questionnaire was carried out on the type of breastfeeding and its duration. The results were presented in tabular form; the percentage was used as a summary measure. RESULTS: A prevalence of transverse micrognathism was found in 59% without the presence of diastema in 71%, and with 67% of presence of deep palatal vault, the most prevalent oral habit was onychophagia in 31%; there were similar percentages between interrupted lactation and adequate lactation; predominantly prolonged lactation by 45%. CONCLUSIONS: Transverse micrognathism is present in a large percentage of the population studied; being more prevalent in the female sex in an average age between 8 to 9 years. Interrupted breastfeeding produces transverse micrognathism, absence of physiological diastemas, and presence of deep palatal vault; The most predominant place in the appearance of micrognathism is in the maxill a, with no predominant relationship with the presence of oral habits.
