El rostro del alcoholismo en Cuenca, 1884 - 1895

Abstract:

Through this research we have been able to find some of the principles that were followed to combat the fatal addiction of alcohol in the final years of XIX century. Given that the antecedents necessarily refer us to the adoption of a Catholic, civilizing and moralizing modernity dabbled by the Garcianism, in the first chapter a special mention it is made of this, without neglecting the historical context in economics, and social, political and especially religious matters, because is in this last area where anti-alcoholic initiatives were born (Found Houses of Temperance), which will be analyzed in the second chapter, together with the hygienist politics adopted by the State. The latter constitute another fact to be taken into consideration. In the third chapter, the research tries to give anextensive historical vision that will help to understand the customs, and how it was possible that alcoholism was so ingrained in our society (city of Cuenca). Moderation and regeneration were achieved due to the work of two altruistic historical figures who joined forces from their positions of command and gave solutions to the problem that represented drunkenness in the city.
