Alterations in mechanoreceptor input to Brodmann's areas 1 and 3 of the postcentral hand area of Macaca mulatta after nerve section and regeneration

Abstract:

Changes in the somatotopic organization and distribution of response-specific cortical columns in the postcentral gyrus of Macaca mulatta, following severance and regeneration of the sensory nerves of the hand, are presented. The following specific changes were found:(1) There is commonly representation away from normal projection sites and areas. (2) There are alterations in the normal homogeneous input to the cortical cellular columns as demonstrated by the appearance of neurons driven by stimulation of several discrete peripheral receptive fields, and by several peripheral receptor populations. (3) There is bkp_redistribution of slowly adapting input to cytoarchitectonic areas 3 and 1. The possible meaning of these changes is discussed in relation to the phenomenon of ‘false localization’ which occurs following regeneration of injured peripheral nerves, and in relation to the known anatomical and physiological …
