Alterations of personality and psychological well-being in older adults

Abstract:

Older adult personality alterations appear to be related to psychological well-being. The Mini Mult inventory was applied to determine the personality alterations and the Psychological Wellbeing Scale (EBP) to 318 older adults aged 65 to 94 who participate in groups of the older adult of the province of Tun-gurahua, Ecuador. The objective was to test the hypothesis that the scales evaluated by the Mini Mult for Hypochondriasis, Depression, Psychopathic Deviance, Psychasthenia, Paranoia, Hys-teria and Schizophrenia are related with the dimensions of the EBP: Acceptance/Control, Autonomy, Psychosocial Link and Projects. Sta-tistical analyses were performed with the SSPS program the findings suggested that only the Social Link dimension is associated with Hypo-chondriasis, Depression, Psychopathic Deviation and Schizophrenia, meanwhile the Acceptance and Control dimension would be related to Hys-teria. On the other hand, significant differences were found between age and Depression scores, and it was also determined the association between age and Hypochondriasis, Depression, Acceptance and Control; while gender would be associated with Psychopathic Deviance. In the other dimensions of both tests, no significant correlations were found. Further research on so-ciodemographic and specific indicators for each of the dimensions is required to deepen the un-derstanding of the relationship between well-being and personality changes in older adults.
