Abstract:

Recycling is an ecological option to reduce the contamination of solid waste, since plastic to be reused requires a transformation process, which consumes energy and generates waste; nevertheless, it is a necessary solution in a world where overproduction reigns over the protection of the environment. The objective of this research was to diagnose the contamination of plastic bottles and the production of PET material as a source of income for waste pickers in the city of Ibarra (Ecuador) during the period September 2016-March 2017. The sample consisted of 169 waste pickers that meet at least one of the criteria for inclusion, from a universe of 300 people that make up the association, also conducted a survey of 383 inhabitants of the city to know their recycling practices. The city of Ibarra produces 125 daily tons of garbage, of which 40 correspond to plastic material, 48% of the city's inhabitants classify garbage. It was concluded that the recycling and production of PET material can generate sources of employment and income for people, as well as the reduction of environmental pollution.
