( Vavilov Seamount Central Tyrrhenian Sea. Data from dives in submarine Cyana Mediterranean).

Abstract:

Four dives in submarine Cyana showed that Vavilov seamount is composed of 2 parts: a series of thick submarine lava flows between 3600 and 1500m depth and 2 volcanic cones, the southern one rising up to 685m below sea level. The lower part is tilted southwestward by 10o. This Quaternary volcano is clearly younger than the surrounding oceanic crust and its petrology is similar to that of oceanic islands. Radiometric ages of upper lavas range from 0.1 to 0.4 Ma and numerous characteristics suggest a late phase of construction in subaerial environment. These data lead to an evaluation of the subsidence rate during Pleistocene times and suggest that this volcanism is not related to the Tyrrhenian oceanic accretion. -English summary
