Alternative and Complementary Medicine in the university teaching of Health Sciences in Ecuador


Abstract:

Objective: To describe the integration of alternative medicine as a basic subject in the academic offer of degree and / or postgraduate courses of public and private universities in Ecuador. Method: A cross-sectional, quantitative, descriptive, and documentary study was carried out by performing complete review of the curricula of the medicine and nursing degrees of Ecuadorian universities, based on the general academic offer of degree and postgraduate studies, set out on the web sites of each one of the universities. Participants: A total of 59 universities legally accbkp_redited by the Council of Higher Education. Results: There is a predominance (33%) of public universities with an academic offer of medicine compared to the private sector, which incorporates alternative medicine subjects in their curriculum, while for the nursing course the private sector has the highest percentage (20%) that includes alternative medicine in its curriculum. Conclusions: Although alternative medicine having a greater number of supporters by providing a window of therapeutic possibilities in multiple diseases, its inclusion in the curricula of Ecuadorian universities is still scarce.
