Electromechanical prototype used for physical deployment of Braille characters for digital documents

Abstract:

This article shows the design and implementation of a prototype capable of deploying physically Braille characters of a digital text, which is sent by a computer program that transcribes to Braille, documents in PDF and TXT format to a computer. A software programmed in Java is developed, which has a graphical interface that displays the document in plain text and the line of text to be displayed in the prototype. The translation considers grammatical rules of Braille in Spanish, including special characters. The device is connected to the computer using an USB connection and has a 18F2550 microcontroller through which communication with the computer and servo controllers is managed. Performance tests are conducted at the Institute for Blind and Deaf Children «Mariana de Jesus», in Quito, Ecuador.
