Electronic nose prototype for explosive detection

Abstract:

During the past thirty years there has been enormous interest in the detection of odours by means of electronic instrumentation. This has led to the development of devices called 'electronic noses' that typically include an array of selective sensors with a pattern recognition software. The present work describes the design process of an electronic nose prototype for explosive detection. The implementation includes the electronic design, a mathematical model for substance identification and an experimental setup for testing. This prototype was able to detect and differentiate distinct substances from diverse sources with a sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 90% using Leave-one-out cross-validation.
