Emotional intelligence and academic performance: a study in schoolchildren from Huambaló, Ecuador

Abstract:

Objective: To analyze the development of emotional intelligence in schoolchildren with low and adequate academic performance from Huambaló, Ecuador. Method: A quantitative study, with a case and control design. Psychometric and quantitative techniques like the TMMS-24 instruments and report cards were used. The sample consisted of a study group (low academic performance), and a control group (adequate academic performance), paired in gender and age, with a total of 68 schoolchildren between 9 and 11 years old. Results: In the evaluation of emotional attention, emotional clarity and emotional repair, no statistically significant differences were obtained between the female and male gender of the studied schoolchildren. These dimensions are identified with a low level of development in schoolchildren with low academic performance and adequate development in those with good performance. The Student's t test identifies significant differences in the results between the study group and the control group. Conclusions: In schoolchildren from Huambaló, Ecuador, there is no statistically significant difference in emotional development between the female and male gender. Schoolchildren with poor academic performance pay little attention to their emotions, they must improve their perception and regulation. Schoolchildren with adequate academic performance show a good development of these skills and these results are statistically significant.
