Endoscopic treatment of gastric and ectopic varices


Abstract:

Gastric variceal bleeding in patients with chronic liver disease is associated with a high mortality, which can reach as high as 20% in the 6 weeks after the index bleeding event. Moreover, the rebleeding of gastric varices is a relatively more challenging clinical scenario, with fewer therapeutic alternatives. 1, 2 Achieving the obliteration of gastric varices either before or after a bleeding episode has been one of the primary goals of clinicians, endoscopists, hepatologists, and radiologists. Medical interventions aimed at reducing portal pressure alone do not effectively achieve varix obliteration or prevent varix bleeding. 3 Current clinical guidelines endorse endoscopic treatment with glue injections as the initial treatment of choice for actively bleeding gastric varices.
