Engineering interface inside the operative room: Design and simulation of a fracture-plate bending machine

Abstract:

Fracture-plates are used inside the operative room (OR) for bone fixation after fractures or for osteotomies. Typical process includes the need to form the plate to the anatomical shape of the patient's bone. Although some plates are available with a pre-bend shape, the need to adapt them exactly to the curvature of the patient's anatomy remain standing. Current procedures inside the OR include the use of bulky and impractical manual machines that lack of precision. This study proposes the design and simulation of a bending machine that shapes the plates saving time and yet offering precision to this procedure.
