Epidemiological behavior of hypertension in adult individuals of the municipality of San Cristobal Tachira-Venezuela
Abstract:
Introduction: Hypertension is a worldwide public health problem, due to its high prevalence, morbidity and mortality, being considered a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of hypertension, associated factors and demographics in the adult population of the San Cristóbal-State Táchira, Venezuela. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study undertaken in 362 adults of both genders, whom a complete clinical history, physical examination and laboratory work-up was done. Hypertension was classified according to JNC-7, and proper blood pressure control was evaluated using JNC-8 criteria. A logistic regression was performed to analyze the main factors associated with hypertension. Results: The prevalence of hypertension was 35,64% (27,35% for Known Hypertensive and 8,29% of New Diagnoses). According to blood pressure control in known hypertensives, 72,7% met the goals proposed by JNC-8. In the univariate association between hypertension and age and BMI was found. In the regression model, significant risk factors for hypertension were: sex, age, smoking, family history of hypertension, and BMI. Conclusions: There is a high prevalence of hypertension in the studied population, being sex, age, smoking, family history of hypertension and BMI the most important risk factors. Its necessary to conduct further prospective studies in order to evaluate hypertension risk factors, both local and nationwide.
