Epidemiological behavior of subclinical hypothyroidism and its association with cardiometabolic risk factors in adult Municipality Maracaibo, Venezuela

Abstract:

Introduction: the relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism (HSC) and several cardiovascular risk factors is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to analyze the behavior of such factors in adults with HSC in the Maracaibo Municipality, Zulia state, Venezuela. Materials and Methods: Four hundred and twenty five individuals were selected from the data base of the Maracaibo city Metabolic Syndrome Prevalence Syndrome, based on clinical history and availability of TSH, T3, T4, anti-thyroid antibodies, fasting glycemia and insulin, and lipid profile. The quantitative variables were expressed as absolute and relative frequencies, while the quantitative variables as mean ± SD. A logistic regression model was calculated to determine risk factors in regards to HSC. Results: the prevalence of HSC was 9,6% (n=41), showing elevated levels of glycemia, total cholesterol, triacilglycerides, VLDL, and decrease in T3 (p=0.017). The presence of HSC is proportional to age and has a significant association with positive anti-thyroid antibodies. HSC confers risk for cardiometabolic diseases like type 2 Diabetes Mellitus and cardiovascular disease. Conclusions: the prevalence of HSC is similar to that observed in other studies, being associated with several cardiometabolic risk factors. It̀s necessary to evaluate thyroid function in an appropriate manner, especially in the elderly, to be able to do an early diagnosis and initiate an effective follow-up and management in this group.
