Epidemiological concepts and historical examples


Abstract:

The epidemiologic approach integrates study design, statistical methods, and the biological and sociological bases of disease making a powerful strategy for solving complex health problems and evaluating potential solutions. Ongoing epidemiologic surveillance provides essential information for making health decisions for public health practitioners, clinicians and the public. This article includes definitions of common epidemiologic terms, an overview of epidemiologic study designs, and current and historical examples of the application of the epidemiologic approach to infectious diseases.
