Epidemiological profile of newborn with hyperbilirubinemia from the hospital alfredo noboa montenegro, Ecuador
Abstract:
Objective: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of infants with hyperbilirubinemia of the Hospital Alfredo Noboa Montenegro, Ecuador. Materials and methods: This was a descriptive and retrospective study of infants evaluated at the Hospital Alfredo Noboa Montenegro during the period from January to December 2018. The data from the records found in the department of medical statistics of the hospital was used, the statistical analysis was performed with the SPSS program. Results: Out of the 107 newborns, 57% (n=61) were male, the majority (94%; n=101) had <48 hours from birth, ≥37 weeks (93%; n=100) and between 2500-3500 grams (87%; n=93) at birth. Kramer plane II was the most frequent with 47% (n=36), 94% had <15 mg/dl of indirect bilirubin and only 21% (n=22) had direct positive Coombs test. 78% (n=60) had an in-hospital stay <3 days and the same percentage of infants received phototherapy. Conclusion: Out of the total of infants evaluated with hyperbilirubinemia of the Hospital Alfredo Noboa Montenegro in 2018; the majority were male, at term, with adequate birth weight. The main associated pathology was blood group incompatibility, however; only a minority showed severe indirect hyperbilirubinemia with a short hospital stay.
