Equine Dourine: Sexual Transmission disease in horses that affects the economy of the productor - Review

Abstract:

Equine Dourine is a sexual transmission disease (STD) in equidae produced by the parasite Trypanosoma equiperdum. It is sometimes considered la an acute disease and chronic, depending on the concentration of the causative agent and the physiological and immunological status of the infected animal. This disease is important for veterinarians and zootechnicians as for the owners of these animals because the control and treatment measures are extreme, as is the case of castration of males or the elimination of the infected animal. The treatment by the administration of antiparasitics continues in doubt by its effectiveness, some of the infected animals tend to become asymptomatic carriers, further damaging this animals population and its economic usefulness. The mortality rate for the Equine Dourine in untreated cases may reach 70%. It is not considered as a zoonotic disease but as a obligatory reporting disease to the OIE. Although cases has never been reported in Ecuador, it should not be considered a free country of Equine Dourine, because of the missing of studies to confirm its presence. It is endemic in parts of Africa, Asia and Russia, with eventual cases in the Middle East and Europe.
