Essential Oils from Male and Female Flowers of Clusia hilariana


Abstract:

The large neotropical genus Clusia, comprising more than 300 species and distributed from Southern Florida (Key West) to Southern Brazil, is remarkable for its great diversity in habit, flower morphology, pollination biology, and ecological adaptations [1]. Most of Clusia species have dioecious flowers [2]. Several substances were identified from flowers of Clusia species, such as benzophenones [3], terpenoids [4], and xantophylls [5]. Clusia hilariana Schlecht. occurs from southeastern (Rio de Janeiro and Espirito Santo states) to northeastern (Bahia and Pernambuco states) Brazil [6]. This species is one of the most representative found in Restinga de Jurubatiba National Park [7] and is often a central shrub (not taller than 8 m) nursing understorey plants [8].
