An Open Source Synchronous and Asynchronous Approach for Database Replication

Abstract:

Information is one of the most important assets of an organization. Therefore, database management systems need to ensure that this information is adequately safeguarded. Moreover, non-functional characteristics such as availability, performance, and security become critical during the use and management of a database. Therefore, to assure such capabilities, database management systems implement high availability and fault-tolerance systems. However, most times these solutions have high costs with privative licenses and specific implementation requirements. This paper presents a method to address server replication and failover by using open source utilities available in the Linux operating system. We accomplish such goals through the implementation of synchronous and asynchronous techniques which use the activity logs provided by the database management system. Finally, in order to demonstrate the feasibility of this proposal, it has been carried out a proof of concept implementation with Oracle databases deployed on a Linux operating system, in which the high-availability issue is solved successfully through dual back up with synchronous and asynchronous methods.
