Estimation of Snow-Covered Area for Echaurren Basin, Chile from 3-Band Landsat Images
Abstract:
Estimation of snow-covered area in alpine basins from remote-sensing data o ers the potential to improve forecasts of snowmelt runo Rango and Itten, 1976; Rango and Martinec, 1979; Martinec and Rango, 1981]. Because of the steep topography, spatially varying radiation and heterogeneous snow-cover characteristics found in alpine basins, high-resolution data such as available from the US Landsat or European Spot programs are well suited to these estimates. Even at the 30-m resolution of the Landsat Thematic Mapper, however, pixels in the image often have only partial snow cover. That is, the surface has between 0 and 100 percent snow cover, with the remainder being rock, soil or vegetation. Three other problems in using Landsat are: i) the variable illumination that occurs in mountain regions, ii) the frequent presence of clouds, and iii) saturation of the visible bands over snow and clouds. Thus binary …
