1 The Socio-Economic Background
Abstract:
The Republic of Ecuador is located in the northwest of South America. It is a small country compared to others in the region; however, it has 91 types of terrestrial ecosystems and 21 of the 27 recognized aquatic ecosystems. Its territory includes jungles, the Andes Mountains, the Pacific coast and the Galapagos Islands. Ecuador has a population size of approx. 17.4 million people (2019)(World Bank 2020), and concentrates the sixth largest Indigenous population and the fifth largest population of Afro-descendants in Latin America. In the last years, Ecuador has experienced high economic growth triggered by high oil prices, economic reforms, public investments and external financing. This growth was accompanied by remarkable social gains in areas such as poverty and inequality (World Bank 2018).
