Abstract:
A number of Latin American countries are experiencing an epidemiological transition, with an increasing proportion of morbidity and mortality due to genetic disorders and birth defects [1]. Despite this, health care systems in some of these nations have not responded appropriately to the rising needs in terms of genetic services [2, 3]. Many misconceptions have been related to this: ie that genetic services are always related to high-tech and prohibitively expensive tests, that very little can be done to improve health and quality of life of affected individuals and their families, and that prenatal diagnosis is closely linked to abortion [4]. The World Health Organization (WHO) has supported the development of genetic services in developing countries, convened meetings of experts in medical genetics from developing nations, and published recommendations [5, 6].
