An exact analysis of RZ versus NRZ sensitivity in ASE noise limited optical systems

Abstract:

The performance of an ASE-noise-limited system using an exact semianalytical method was analyzed. The analysis showed that the sensitivity gap between the NRZ and RZ modulation formats decreases when the optical filter bandwidth decreased. It was found that in modern ultra-densely-packed dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) systems the gap could in fact be reversed in favor of NRZ, when the optical filter bandwidth reaches twice the bit rate or lower.
