An integrated approach to land evaluation: Grampian Region

Abstract:

This paper describes the use of GIS overlay procedures and GIS linked to models for investigating potential future land use scenarios at a regional scale. Overlay is used to develop and describe an Indicative Forestry Strategy, the GIS allowing a variety of land allocation rules to be assessed. This allows the consequences of applying different priorities to agricultural, conservation, landscape or archaeological constraints to be evaluated. An inductive spatial model based on Bayes' theorem is used to pbkp_redict the distribution of red deer habitat in Grampian Region. This is evaluated against the Indicative Forestry Strategy to assess possible areas of conflict between forestry and red deer. A framework applying models and GIS to evaluation of land use change is described. This is intended to allow a more full evaluation as a contribution to integrated land use planning and policy formulation. -Author
