Estudio comparativo del uso de suero autólogo combinado a lubricantes artificiales vs. lubricantes artificiales en el tratamiento del ojo seco asociado a artritis reumatoidea
Abstract:
Introduction. - Given that in Ecuador and the Luis Vernaza Hospital there are no reports and/or clinical studies on the dry eye syndrome, nor is there an established protocol for its treatment, this study pretends to start a therapeutic order. Objective.- It aims to determine if the combination of autologous serum and lubricants is more effective than the use of lubricants alone for the treatment of the dry eye syndrome associated to rheumatoid arthritis, using the medical records registered at the Luis Vernaza Hospital from may to march 2014. Materials and methods.- It is a historical study of 114 patients diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis who were treated with artificial lubricants and autologous serum. The following were assessed: ocular surface disease index (OSDI) questionnaire, visual acuity, Schirmer's test, tear break-up time, Rose Bengal, Lissamine green, and Fluorescein stain tests, intraocular pressure, and ocular fundus. A sample of 74 patients (147 eyes) was taken. Results.- It was found that the percentage of asymptomatic patients in the initial phase was 1.35%, in the first control 5.81%, and10.81% in the second control. Visual acuity without deficiencies for both eyes was 24.5% in the initial phase, 42.7% in the first control, and 43.5% in the second one. No adverse effects were found in 98.65% of the sample. Adherence was of 93.24% in the first control and 94.60% in the second one. Conclusion.- The combination of autologous serum and artificial lubricants is more efficient than the use of lubricants alone in the treatment of dry eye syndrome associated to rheumatoid arthritis.
