An open-switch fault detection method for cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter fed industrial drives

Abstract:

Fault tolerance in high power multilevel converters is a desirable feature particularly in applications such as marine propulsion where continuity of service is critical. However, the medium voltage drive system's reliability becomes vulnerable due the number of power semiconductor devices in the system. Therefore it is utmost important to identify the faulty device as fast as possible to isolate it from the system. In this paper the medium voltage drive chosen is a cascaded H-bridge on which the proposed fault detection technique is applied. The proposed technique uses only current signature to detect the faulty module and hence no extra sensors are required. The feasibility of the proposed method is verified in simulation.
