Estudio de la desigualdad de ingresos en el Ecuador considerando esfuerzos y herencias sociales

Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to analyze the behaviour of earnings in the Ecuadorian labor market as a function of both variables: inheritance and personal efforts. The inheritance variables are circumstantial and are composed of several situations or conditions that surrounds and affects a person from his/her birth. They mainly correspond to the family background. On the other hand, personal effort variables are characterized by the qualities, skills and situations taken in order to increase his/her productivity as a worker and therefore his/herincome. In this study, we are going to determinate the qualitative relationship between these variables by using simulations to evaluate the effect of these variables on earnings. We will take into consideration different age ranges of people as well as consider some scenarios where everyone has equal opportunities at birth (same inherited characteristics). Finally, we are going to calculate the Gini index to evaluate the effects on the income inequality. The data analyzed will be obtained from the Encuesta de Condiciones de Vida, ECV (2006).
