Eurocentric artistic research and the epistemic-aesthetic decolonization
Abstract:
Throughout the history of the Western world, Epistemology has left its impression on the aesthetic forms of art. Philosophy, theology and science have crystallised in the forms of the image, of the eikon. Despite the essential differences among these aesthetic models, they all coincide on the search of the universal. However, these models are not the only ones which are true. There are other epistemologies and aesthetics beyond Eurocentrism. The Latin American decolonial theory criticises the processes of colonial knowledge and understanding and at the same time it proposes a new way of thinking and creating. This new way is not so exclusive and unidirectional as the Western one, but it is open to an intercultural and transdisciplinary dialogue between knowledges. Thus, we will choose as the object of study, the approach on the research in arts adopted by the Universidad de las Artes de Ecuador, to account for the relationship between epistemology and aesthetics in the decolonial framework.
