Analysis and implementation of a radiofrequency system to improve mobile phone coverage in the Cerrito de los Morreños community.

Abstract:

Nowadays mobile telephony has become a fundamental aspect for the development of social and economic activities, however, there are still limitations to make access to it universal, especially in rural areas where the installation of infrastructure is less feasible and profitable due to the density of users since it does not represent a commercial benefit for mobile service provider companies. Among the areas that have no access to mobile telephony are the marginal communes of the Gulf of Guayaquil, one of them is the Cerrito de los Morreños commune, which is approximately an hour and a half away from Guayaquil by river. The commune is home to around 800 people and its main source of income is artisanal shrimp fishing and the catching of crab, however, this community is affected by serious deficiencies in essential services and communication due to the fact that cellular coverage is scarce, hindering any type of remote or virtual communication with nearby cities, being this a great disadvantage in the productive and social development of the community. Given this problem, this work aimed to improve the cellular coverage of the Cerrito de los Morreños community, therefore this document describes the analysis, sizing and testing process for the installation of a radiofrequency system that includes a GSM cellular signal repeater in said commune, it should be noted that this was carried out as part of the community service project of the Telecommunications Engineering Degree at Escuela Superior Politécnica del Litoral, in order to improve the technological and communication infrastructure in the commune for the development of its inhabitants and their daily activities. Initially, the target zone was evaluated determining that there is little mobile coverage in its inhabited area, however, when accessing the steep hill of the commune, it was possible to intermittently reach better levels of signal reception, therefore, a radioelectric study was carried out on-site and the modeling of the scenario using the Radio Mobile simulator. With the results obtained from the simulation, the required system was dimensioned, using a GSM signal repeater in the 850 MHz band. Finally, the repeater was installed in the place that presented the best coverage, resulting in the amplification of the cellular signal levels so the inhabitants were able to make cell phone calls and send text messages without exposing themselves to fall hazards when accessing the steep path of the hill. This is expected to have a positive impact on the social and economic development of the community.
