Analysis of Extreme Wave Conditions in the Galápagos Archipelago

Abstract:

The aim of this work is to carry out an analysis of the extreme wave conditions in the Galápagos Archipelago. For which, Wave and wind data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Pbkp_rediction (ECMWF) were used. First, we do a characterization of the wave spectrum, then we use the Extreme Value Analysis (EVA), with the peak over threshold method (POT). After that, we found the extreme events and their return periods to 100 years. Finally, the physical analysis of the three largest storms recorded in the period from 1979 to 2015 was carried out. In which we determined that their upward trajectories (from south to north) and their great intensity generate the bottom swell, that contributes to the production of extreme values in the Galapagos Islands. Furthermore, the maximum significant wave height is 3.8 m for a return period of 100 years.
