Analysis of a network with can protocol for detection of failures

Abstract:

In past decades, vehicles with an electronic injection system incorporated a single electronic control module (ECU). However, given their complexity, it has been necessary to implement several ECUs and sensors for the different electronic systems. This document aims to implement a diagnostic method by verifying elements that vary in the information frame or data frames of the CAN (Controller Area Network) protocol of a 2009 Volkswagen Jetta vehicle to reduce the diagnostic time. The information of the communication network collected in databases, by means of a National Instruments (NI) acquisition card, allowed to observe and analyze the data frames in real time, while the PCM (Power-Train Control Module) module was manipulated. The data obtained based on generating intentional failures were compared with the normal operating states, which allowed recognizing the bytes that changed at the time the vehicle was in a fault situation. In addition, Matlab software was used to develop a communication network model through its Vehicle Network Toolbox (VNT) platform to verify the behavior of information in real time and whose results were validated using the CAN network prototype.
