Analysis of harmonic distortion of led luminaires connected to utility grid

Abstract:

Increasing installation of LED luminaires in street lighting has multiple advantages due to energy-efficient and light distribution. However, LED luminaires are nonlinear loads that inject distorted current unto the power system. This paper analyzes the harmonic distortion generated by LED luminaires on a real-world distribution feeder, to determine the impact of replacing high pressure sodium luminaires by LED technology, specifically on the harmonic distortion levels of the delivery power system. The distribution feeder and lighting loads are modelled by using CYME, laboratory measurements and database from the system owner that are used to develop a complete computer model of the system. Simulation results show that, by using LED luminaires, the total harmonic current distortion is significantly reduced improving power quality in the distribution system.
