Analysis of the impact of the electric vehicles charging on distribution transformers
Abstract:
The growing demand for electric vehicles and their imminent insertion into distribution systems imposes new challenges to distribution network planners, who require techniques and methodologies that allow them to analyze and determine the impact or effect that such insertion entails, with the purpose of implementing the necessary measures to not to affect the performance and operability of the network. This paper proposes a technical analysis methodology to evaluate the impact of electric vehicles charging on distribution transformers, considering different levels of penetration of electric vehicles in the distribution system, based on stochastic models that represent the randomness of the behavior of the consumer and multi-scenarios that investigate the charging behavior of batteries with their designated harmonic levels. In addition, the study includes the identification of the main indicators for the evaluation of the possible impacts that the new demand causes on distribution transformers, allowing any distribution company to determine comprehensively the impact of electric vehicle charging on distribution transformers and its possible mitigation alternatives.
