Analysis of the repertoire of the movements of pro-abortion feminists and their media treatment in the episodes of political contest in 2008 and 2013
Abstract:
The research is based on the discussion of the decriminalization of abortion in Ecuador, promoted by the pro-abortion groups in the episodes of political contest 2008 (Constituent process) and 2013 (COIP). It is done in two moments. In the first, through the in-depth interview, the repertoires of instrumental discourse and action that built the pro-abortion movements are reconstructed. In the second moment, with the analysis of agenda setting, the coverage that newspapers El Comercio and El Telégrafo displayed based on abortion is determined. Also, the analysis of framing, allowed to establish the predominant squares in the published news. The results show how abortion functioned as a collective action device unifying feminist organizations, which framed the issue through three repertoires of discourse: public health, social justice and the sovereignty of bodies. The category with the highest media frequency was “abortion as a political conflict”.
