Abstract:
Materials and methods The data used in this analysis were derived from a longitudinal prospective study of the association of behaviors related to water usage and hygiene with occurrence of child diarrhea in Santa Maria de Jesus, Sacatepequez, Guatemala. This is a rural indigenous community which had been the subject of a previous two-year study of persistent diarrhea. INCAP surveys performed immediately prior to that study found 82% of male heads of households to be subsistence farmers, the mean family size to be five persons, the literacy rate to be 77% among males and 39% among females, and 79% of families to live in houses with earthen floors. During the last months of the persistent diarrhea study the community installed an in-house piped water system
