Analysis of the teachers approaches in the development of oral communication skills with third year Baccalaureate students at Mariano Benitez Public School.
Abstract:
Learning a foreign language is indeed a challenge which demands the domain of four main skills denominated listening, speaking, reading and writing. Unfortunately, in public schools, the aforementioned skills are not fully developed due to extrinsic factors that include a large number of students per classroom, a lack of motivation on the part of the students and teachers’ approaches that will be investigated in this research. In teaching a foreign language, most educators tend to make use of traditional teaching methods, which are solely focused on reading and writing skills, however, oral communication skills such as speaking and listening are given little importance. Listening and speaking skills also need to be developed in the classroom context. Whereas in high school, pupils receive formal instruction in reading and writing in a second language, most have not received formal instruction in speaking and listening skills. For this reason, the need for instruction in oral communication has been emphasized in numerous reports by Ecuadors Direction of Education, although it has been underemphasized in many of our schools. The consequence is that learners have many problems with oral communication.
