Analysis of the workload of nursing staff, according to the severity of the patient

Abstract:

Introduction: The workload can be an important factor in the occurrence of incidents in the Intensive Care Units, because with less vigilance on some patients, they could increase the frequency of incidents. Objetives: To analyze the nursing workload according to the severity of the patient in the intensive care unit of the Dr. Verdi Cevallos Balda Hospital in Portoviejo. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out from May to October 2016. The TISS 28 Score was used as a tool, quantifying the result of the items, the median was taken as the central measure to obtain the percentage of use of the day According to the degree of severity of the patient. Results: There was an excess of work load in the nursing staff that gives attention to those admitted to this unit, aspects that can lead to a detriment of the quality in patient care. Conclusions: Through the application of the TISS Score 28, the severity of the patients admitted to the Adult Intensive Care Unit of the Dr. Verdi Cevallos Balda Hospital could be identified and establish the nursing care required to achieve the stability and recovery of These patients. Based on the results of this tool, it was possible to determine that there was an excess in the workload according to the nurse /patient relationship, which is attentive to the quality of patient care in this service.
