Analysis of three-dimensional cardiac images


Abstract:

Image analysis is a useful tool for the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of several diseases. The image processing techniques allow noninvasive quantitative assessment of human pathophysiology, providing morphological, functional and dynamical information of the diferent anatomical structures. Recent technological progress on the diferent modes of observation have increased the quality of patient treatment, through the use of novel processing techniques of three-dimensional images. However, the acquisition of these dynamical three-dimensional images leads to the generation of large volumes of data, from which the anatomical structures are extracted and analyzed, considering the clinical context restrictions. Currently, sophisticated tools for extracting, three-dimensional visualization and quantification are used in clinical routine, but unfortunately, these tools require significant interaction of the specialist. As a result, a set of new methods are available to the clinician in order to accurately assess the anatomy and pathophysiology from three-dimensional images, which represents a certain progress in the process leading to obtain a complete description of the heart from a single test.
