Evaluation of a ferritic 5Cr-0.5Mo steel joints using a 309 austenitic stainless steel electrode

Abstract:

This work was carried out to evaluate the performance of welds, using a 309Mo stainless steel electrode, as an alternative way to weld 5Cr-0.5Mo steel. The study was based on microstructural analysis, heat affected zone width, and mechanical properties such as hardness, tensile strength and bending. The results showed that the weld obtained was adequate, though it has hardness values in the heat affected zone higher than 250 HV, which corresponds to the limit required by the Asme/Stoomwezen standards for pressure vessels.
