Evaluation of bananas for niche markets in subtropical Florida
Abstract:
37 new banana accessions were introduced to South Florida and the objectives of the studies were to determine the accessions: 1) adaptation to local soils and winter conditions; 2) productivity and quality of fruit; 3) resistance to fusarium wilt. Although most of the accessions displayed at least one meritorious characteristic, only 8 dessert and 8 cooking clones produced reasonable high yields of acceptable fruit. But some of the most popular and productive clones were susceptible to Fusarium wilt. The following highly ranked clones are resistant to fusarium wilt, and appear to have potential in all production areas in southern Florida. Based on these results, the dessert clones' Pisang Ceylon', FHIA-01 AAAB, FHIA-02 AAAA and FHIA-17 AAAA, and the cooking clones' Kumunamba','Kandrian'and'Saba'ABB, are recommended.
