Evaluation of the business continuity management of it areas in the industrial and fishing sector of the city of Manta: 16A Earthquake study case
Abstract:
Natural disasters are one of the reasons why Information Technology (IT) can be affected and Business Continuity. On April 16th, 2016 - 16A, the city of Manta, fishing port of Ecuador, was affected by an earthquake measuring 7.8 degrees on the Richter scale. This research evaluates Business Continuity Management in IT area, in the city of Manta of the fishing-industrial sector, before, during and after 16A, through a structured interview in three sections, respectively; applied to 30 IT directors/managers of the sector. Results show that 13% of companies had implemented a policy of Business Continuity Management System before 16A; during 16A the IT area operations were restored to normality in an average of 60 hours. After 16A, at least, 47% of companies defined a business continuity plan, which highlights the importance of raising awareness, investing and implementing Business Continuity Management Systems in IT and organizations.
