Evaluation of the carbon print of a university for the energy efficiency policy

Abstract:

Climate change is a problem mani-fested by the increase in temperature on the planet caused by the emission of greenhouse gases (GHG) and through the measurement of the carbon footprint an inventory can be made to reduce these Emissions. In this context, this research determined the carbon footprint of the Salesian Polytechnic University (UPS), Guayaquil, in 2016, obtaining the value of 1.630, 196 t CO2e, its calculation was carried out to determine the value of GHG emissions which generates the institution by its activity and contribute with new initiatives in the energy efficiency policy. Estimates for scopes 1, 2 and 3 were set out for direct, indirect, product and service emissions acquired following the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG) procedure of the World Business Council for Sustainable Development Development, WBCSD) and by the World Resources Institute (WRI). Finally, through this evaluation, recommendations were made that prioritize the reduction of the consumption of energy, resources and materials to have a greater contribution of the university with the reduction of GHG.
