Evaluation of two probiotic preparations in the reproductive and health performance of breeder sows and their descendants.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biological response of sows and their offspring to the supplementation of two probiotic preparations. In order to do so, twelve hybrid sows were used (Landrace/Yorkshire), with no farrowing records, distributed into three groups of four animals each. One of the groups was supplemented the Preparation-A, another one was supplemented Preparation-B, and the last one was used as a control group, and was not supplemented any preparation. Preparation-A contained Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus bulgariccus and Streptococcus thermophiles; and Preparation-B consisted of the microorganisms included in Preparation-A with the addition of Sachharomyces cerevisae and Kluyveromyces fragilis L-4 (UCLV). A completely randomized design was used to conduct the study, and there were evaluated the parameters: performance of live weight for gestation and lactation stages; weight gain during gestation and weight loss during lactation; variation of Hb, Hto and total leukocytes at 14 days postpartum, and percentage of weaned piglets per treatment. The use of preparations improved the performance of live weight, and reduced weight loss during lactation in 2.05 and 3.5 kg (Preparation-A and Preparation-B), respectively when compared to the control one. During gestation, the sows that consumed Preparation-B presented a live weight superior in 4.2 kg when compared to the rest of the experimental groups. In addition, 100% of piglets were weaned. It is concluded that the addition of the preparations in the diets of breeding sows during gestation and lactation favors the achievement of greater weight …
